What happened? And why did an open-source project from a small team beat every Big Tech company to the personal AI assistant that actually works?

The Problem Everyone Else Ignored

For years, we've been promised AI assistants. Siri. Alexa. Google Assistant. Cortana. Billions of dollars spent, and the best they could do was set timers and play music.

The fundamental problem was architectural. These assistants were designed as voice interfaces to walled gardens. Ask Alexa to order something? Sure—from Amazon. Ask Siri to send a message? Sure—through Apple's apps. They weren't assistants. They were storefronts with microphones.

I'm betting on the first path. Not because I'm naive about the risks—I've written plenty about security—but because the underlying demand is real. People want AI that works for them. OpenClaw proved it's possible. That genie isn't going back in the bottle.

The question now isn't whether personal AI assistants will exist. It's who will run them, who will control them, and whether they'll be open or closed. OpenClaw answered that question first. The rest of the industry is still catching up.
